Work in the basement has been ongoing since beginning our remodel. The space was damp and quite muddy and the first floor joists needed additional support. At some point in this house’s history a large hole had been made in the foundation and needed to be supported sufficiently. Overall though the stone foundation is in pretty good shape.
The first step was to clear out all of the junk, rocks, and dirt. Next we put in concrete footers to support the floor joists. In addition we put in a large concrete block to support posts that will support the beam where the wall and been taken out.
Once the footers were in we installed, the posts and a cross beam to support the floor joist went in. In addition we covered the floor with gravel to allow water drainage which is a given in these old houses. The small window came in handy when we have to bring a ton of gravel into the space.
